New Delhi: With the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 poised to welcome millions of devotees and visitors to Prayagraj, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with leading telecom service providers, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to ensure uninterrupted communication and digital access during the world’s largest religious gathering.
Revolutionizing Telecom Infrastructure
The DoT has undertaken significant upgrades to telecom infrastructure, ensuring robust connectivity across Prayagraj city, the expansive Mela area, and key public spaces.
- City-wide Enhancements:
- 126 km of optical fiber laid across Prayagraj.
- 328 new towers/masts installed, bolstered by 575 new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and 1,462 BTS upgrades.
- Mela-Specific Upgrades:
- 192 km of optical fiber laid to ensure high-speed connectivity in the Mela area.
- Deployment of 78 transportable towers (CoWs) and 150 small cell solutions for congested zones.
- Addition of 352 new BTS units and upgrades to 50 existing ones.
- Public Spaces and Highways:
Enhanced coverage in transport hubs, holding areas, and highways, with a focus on the Green Corridor for uninterrupted connectivity in high-traffic areas.
Citizen-Centric and Emergency Services
The initiative goes beyond connectivity, prioritizing public safety and convenience:
- Help Desks: 53 telecom service help desks have been set up to address visitor concerns, such as blocking lost devices or reporting suspicious communications.
- Emergency Alerts: A Cell Broadcast Alert system and Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) platform will deliver disaster warnings and general awareness messages.
- Radiation Compliance: Towers have undergone electro-magnetic radiation testing to ensure safety.
Disaster Management Preparedness
Three disaster management centres, managed by Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi, have been established in the Mela area. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, these centres will provide vital communication support during emergencies, ensuring prompt responses and attendee safety.
A Digital Experience for Millions
From mobile-based payments to live-streaming rituals, the enhanced telecom infrastructure promises a seamless digital experience. The DoT’s commitment to innovation and preparedness positions the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela as a global benchmark in blending tradition with technology.
