New Delhi: The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved the commissioning of two hydroelectric PSPs, 600 MW Upper Indravati in Odisha and 2000 MW Sharavathy in Karnataka, accelerating India’s renewable energy and energy storage capacity growth. The two Hydro PSPs were approved in record time, with joint support from CWC, GSI, CSMRS, and stakeholders.
India needs hydro-pumped storage projects (PSPs) to promote a faster energy transition through the large-scale integration of renewable power in the country while also maintaining energy security.
CEA has received numerous proposals for hydroelectric PSPs, worth 60 GW, undergoing DPR preparation. Developers will upload these PSPs to the Online Portal for CEA’s concurrence, ensuring faster energy storage demand fulfillment.
To expedite the PSP concurrence process in accordance with the Government of India’s ease of doing business initiative, CEA has changed the guidelines to streamline the process of preparing DPRs for PSPs and their concurrence.
The government is prioritizing the development of energy storage systems, particularly PSPs, to ensure energy security, with a projected installed capacity of 74 GW by 2031–2032.
The country has 176 GW of hydro PSPs potential, with 4.7 GW operational, 4 GW under construction, 3.6 GW consented, and 60 GW under study and inquiry.
